As we prepare for 2nd Floor Rear, Cameron and I find ourselves up to all sorts of fun stuff, including a trip this afternoon to the apartment space our exhibition will occupy during the festival. Our show Prescribed Meanings will feature artists who examine how we assign meaning to objects, how objects serve as mediators in our interactions with others, and how, through our relationships with things, we begin to understand ourselves and the world around us.

Today's activities also included an excursion to Family Dollar and Unique Thrift Store where we scavenged for tchotchkes to use in our 'opening' event, which will go down sometime during the festival (date and time TBD). In this interaction, tentatively titled O.T.C., participants communicate their physical/emotional ailments and we prescribe them objects that we believe will treat their particular affliction.

URGENT Call for Artists! Deadline: Jan 25

We are looking for artists/designers who explore meaning-making through work with everyday objects, particularly those from the home environment. Prescribed Meanings will feature artists who examine how we assign meaning to objects, how objects serve as mediators in our interactions with others, and how, through our relationships with things, we begin to understand ourselves and the world around us.

Prescribed Meanings will be a part of 2nd Floor Rear, a 24 hour festival of alternative and itinerant art spaces, which will take place from noon Feb 4 - noon Feb 5.

Event-based submissions are encouraged and will take place during the festival if selected. Physical works will remain on display beyond the festival dates.

Proposal Submission Deadline: January 25, 2012

BLOCK PARTY: An Interactive Microfactory

On Friday, December 9th, the students of the 2011 Contemporary Experiments in Design Events studio present Block Party, an interactive microfactory. This live design installation explores rotational tumbling, a mechanical process used to form an array of industrial materials, from rocks and wood to plastic and glass. Block Party reveals the process of shaping wooden blocks through a simple yet clever design.

Four inverted belt sanders outfitted with small cubicles serve as home-made tumblers, churning out wooden forms that are as precise as they are random. When extracted from the factory setting and inserted into the gallery space, rotational tumbling becomes an abstraction of its industrial origin and is transformed into a participatory performance and sound installation. Block Party merges themes of art, design, and industry into one space by engaging important topics in design events, including situation and participation, form and function, and manufacturing and distribution.

Block Party is hosted by the 31st Century Museum of the Contemporary Spirit at the SAIC’s Sullivan Galleries.

Thanks to my pal Karin Kuroda, who hooked us up with a VIP pass, Cam and I were able to check out this year's International Exposition of Sculpture Objects & Functional Art (a.k.a. SOFA.) We battled torrential winds, molasses-slow tourists, and Navy Pier's labyrinthian interior before finally reaching Festival Hall, where the show takes place annually. But once we got there we were pretty pleased, and I was able to take a few photos with my new camera that didn't turn out completely useless.

Looking for an opportunity to show your work?

We are accepting proposals for a performance art/time-based piece. We are looking for an individual or collective who can work with everyday objects in unexpected ways. The proposed work should be interactive and engage the public. A winning proposal is conceptually strong in that it reveals, for example, the formal aspects of objects, the process of making objects, the relationships we have with objects… you get the idea. The work can be one that you have previously executed or an idea that has not yet been realized.

The artists in Undomesticated approach everyday objects in ways that disrupt the traditional notions of function and form. They re-imagine designed objects, obstructing function altogether. Through modifying commonplace objects drawn from the domestic sphere, the works serve as reinterpretations of design structures while retaining semblances of original form. This allows the viewer to make a distinct connection between the designed object and the art object.

Undomesticated aims to bring attention to the relationship people have with objects and how the dynamic changes when the objects shift from “everyday” to art and from the home to the gallery.
